Why do we need breads and starches?
In the Renal Food Spiral, BREADS & STARCHES are divided into the three colors: green for “GO”, yellow for “CAUTION”, and red for “STOP”. The foods in the green and yellow sections are the healthiest. The foods in the red section have less nutritional value
Breads and starches in the GO section are assigned a Food Factor of 1 . Breads and starches in the CAUTION section are assigned a Food Factor of 2 . Breads and starches in the STOP section are assigned a Food Factor of 3 . Find out from your doctor or dietitian how many Food Factors you are allowed in a day.
By choosing more foods in the GO and CAUTION sections, you will be able to eat more foods than if you chose foods in the STOP section. You will also be making healthier choices. Try to eat breads and starches with at least 3 grams of fiber per serving.
