Fiber: The Core of Good Health & FFF

Posted on 18th Jan 2019

Fact or Fiction? Fiber prevents proper digestion and therefore, should be limited in our diets.

FICTION

Since the new year, many articles have emerged that reference a recently published study emphasizing the importance of FIBER in human health. While it used to have a negative connotation due to its 'impact' on the digestive tract, more and more people are starting to see the MANY benefits Fiber has on the body – Something Food Fitness First has been saying for more than 15 YEARS.

BCC news is reporting Fiber as, “A lifesaving food 90% aren’t eating enough of,” and Health Day News is claiming, “People who consumed higher amounts of fiber reduced their risk of dying from heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer by 16% to 24%, compared with those who had low intakes.”

The recent study was released by a team of researchers from Otago University in New Zealand. It claimed that adding more Fiber to a diet could prevent an early death and reduce the risk of the development or worsening of chronic diseases.

How much Fiber do we recommend? It depends on the FOOD SPIRAL® you are on, but our general recommendation is 25 to 30 grams per day, minimum. (Please talk with your physician and Registered Dietitian (RD) to see what is best for you).

Currently, only 50% of the UK population gets enough Fiber in their diets, and Americans get even less, at 15 grams per day, average.

Why is Fiber so beneficial? It helps you maintain weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels while also boosting good gut bacteria that your body needs to function properly. It also makes you feel full and gives a reason to turn your backs to the new “low-carb diet” fad.

Good sources of Fiber include: Fresh and frozen unsweetened fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grain or whole wheat bread and pasta, brown rice, nuts, dried beans and peas, WK corn, hummus and more.

Lastly, the benefits of Fiber are truly seen when accompanied by exercise and portion control.

So, let’s ask another question: Fact or Fiction? Fiber has numerous health benefits and therefore, should be eaten more in our daily lives.
